More Scientific Evidence that Climate Change is Accelerating

One of the world's most esteemed climate scientists Dr. James Hansen has just released compelling scientific evidence that global warming is accelerating more rapidly than previously projected by organisations like the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In his paper, Global Warming Has Accelerated: Are the United Nations and the Public Well-Informed?, Hansen and his Columbia University colleagues show this acceleration is not just a statistical anomaly. It's an indicator of the intensifying climate crisis.

Hansen's paper identifies three key factors contributing to the acceleration:

1. Higher Climate Sensitivity: His research suggests Earth's climate may be more sensitive to greenhouse gas emissions than previously thought. This means even small increases in emissions can lead to more significant temperature rises, amplifying climate impacts.

2. Feedback Loops: Warming triggers natural processes that further exacerbate temperature increases. For instance, melting polar ice reduces the Earth's albedo (its ability to reflect sunlight), causing more heat to be absorbed and leading to further ice melt - a self-reinforcing cycle.

3. Decline in Aerosol Pollution: Historically, aerosols - tiny particles released into the atmosphere from industrial activities - have had a cooling effect by reflecting sunlight away from Earth. Recent efforts to reduce air pollution have led to a decrease in aerosol emissions, diminishing this cooling effect and revealing the full extent of greenhouse gas-induced warming.

The urgency of Hansen's findings is underscored by recent temperature records. World Meteorological Organisation data shows global temperatures in 2024 hit a new high of 1.55°C above pre-industrial levels. And this January, despite the cooling influence of the La Niña phenomenon, temperatures were 1.75°C above pre-industrial levels, making it the hottest January ever documented.

Oh, and just incase you're wondering if James Hansen is an alarmist. His actions, previous studies and career record prove otherwise. Hansen is a highly respected figure in climate science. As the former Director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and currently a professor at Columbia University, his work has been pivotal in advancing cliamte science. His early climate models have accurately predicted warming trends, and his research continues to be validated by current observations.
